Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations disrupting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were detected entering Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with two of which ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Approximately 14 of the meteorological devices deployed throughout the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."

Officials added that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and create minimal risk to civil aviation."
