As any significant honors show nears, one notices a demand to include additional classifications to honor unsung work and fill the spirits of enthusiasts dedicated to specific genres.
A fellow writer has already made for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre defies precise measurement; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
To recognize the complete range of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, making space possible for numerous titles.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Think about these outstanding current releases, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, and the highly challenging small studio competitions.
- An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated completely in 2014
- A different innovative game missed out that year
- Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
- Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types
Significance of Puzzle Games
These are often small games, but the art behind logic titles is of massive significance. Well-known matching games stand as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.
The iconic tile-matching title rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as highest-selling title ever; it also contends for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these are games that otherwise have no home at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, creating some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Similar to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
