Wimbledon Adopts Video Review Technology This Season.

Wimbledon court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will be launched at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the option to challenge specific calls made by the official, echoing the system currently in use at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This move comes just a year after the AELTC introduced ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review other decisions, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the number of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

The umpire watched a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at all of its tournaments.

Other Changes

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
